About Gold Karat
The karat system originated from ancient carob seeds, which were used as standard weights. Today, karat measures gold purity on a 24-point scale. Pure 24k gold (99.9%) is too soft for most jewelry, so it's mixed with other metals for strength. Common purities: 18k (75% gold) for fine jewelry, 14k (58.3%) for everyday wear, 12k (50% gold) for budget jewelry, and 10k (41.7%) the minimum legally called "gold" in the US.
⚠️ Gold-Plated Items
Minimal Value: Items marked GP, GE, GEP, HGE, or RGP are gold-plated with only a thin layer of gold. These have little to no scrap gold value.
